Short answer

macOS can’t change the brightness of most external monitors. Tuno controls it with the brightness keys or a slider in the menu bar: it talks to the monitor directly (DDC/CI) and dims it in software when the monitor doesn’t listen.

In macOS

Brightness works only on Apple displays and a few compatible models. For other monitors you have to use the buttons on the monitor itself.

With Tuno

  1. 1

Open Tuno; your external displays appear in the menu bar panel and in Tuno › Displays.

  2. 2

Drag the brightness slider for the monitor.

  3. 3

To use the keyboard, turn on “Brightness keys control the external display” and allow Accessibility. The keys adjust whichever display the pointer is on.

macOS 15 or later, Mac with Apple silicon.

Frequently asked questions

What if my monitor doesn’t support DDC?

Tuno dims it in software by darkening the whole screen. It never goes completely black.

Does it work over HDMI on Apple silicon?

Many monitors accept DDC over USB-C and DisplayPort; some built-in HDMI ports don’t. When DDC doesn’t work, Tuno switches to software dimming automatically.
